He left Harvard in his sophomore year to serve as an Army paratrooper. When he returned to college, he helped establish a parachute club. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in history, he co-founded The Parachutist magazine. He became a journalist in Washington DC to cover Congress for regional newspapers. He joined United Press International, and later worked for Newsweek before joining Walter Cronkite's evening news team as a writer.
