The couple has been married for "five or six" years, but their marriage is suffering to the point that they cannot remember the last time they had sex.
Jane assigns a score of 8 to her marriage, and so does John. They tell the story of their first meeting in Bogotá, Colombia, where they met while both were secretly on the run from Colombian authorities as the authorities were looking for tourists traveling alone after a recent heist. Both were cornered at the bar of the same hotel, but the Columbian police and were about to be arrested. John and Jane pretend to know each other and claimed to be together to avoid being questioned.
The electric connection between them is very evident as they share a seductive dance together. They quickly fell in love and were married. John later states in the end that Jane "looked like Christmas morning" to him on the day they met.In reality, John and Jane are both skilled assassins working for different firms, both among the best in their field. Both are among the best in their field, but both with very different methods of assassination, with Jane working out thorough plans and John taking a less analytical approach. Each is concealing their true profession from their spouse. At a fair, John and Jane enter a sharpshooter game, and while Jane takes it easy and misses all her shots, John hits every target and makes Jane suspicious. Jane goes again and wins an even bigger prize than John.
Jane works with Suzy Coleman (Rachael Huntley), while Eddie is John's best friend. The Smiths live in a large Colonial Revival house in the New York City suburbs, keeping up appearances by reluctantly socializing with their "conventionally" wealthy neighbors. Jane feels out of place with the mothers, while John tries to fit in with the financial types, who constantly "guide" him on how to invest his money.Under these cover stories, John and Jane balance their apparently mundane marriage - which both of them find after a few years to be growing dull and suffocating - with their secretive work. Jane tries to act like a normal housewife by taking care of the house, ordering new curtains and even cooking dinner. John, meanwhile, spends most of his time outside the home and pretends to be with Eddie for drinks. John does not like the changes Jane makes in the house, but when he tells her, she refuses to change anything back and insists that John will get used to the changes with time.To irritate Jane, John would put too much salt in his food. Both John and Jane read their own things even at dinner, instead of talking to each other. Jane gets calls from her handler late at night and leaves the house on account of a "server crashing downtown", leading John to believe that she is cheating on him.
John has a huge stash of weapons in an underground cellar, under the tool-shed. Jane has hidden all her weapons arsenal around the house, under the appliances. When both are assigned to kill prisoner Benjamin "The Tank" Danz (Adam Brody) during a transfer from Mexico to the US, they encounter each other on the job and the hit ends up being botched. Jane was hiding in a nearby hill, while John approached with a grenade launcher to take out the target. Jane shoots a rubber bullet at John to deter him, but John instead retaliates by firing his weapon at Jane, instead of at the target. Due to this, the trap set up by Jane explodes prematurely, thereby missing the target. At this point both Jane and John do not know each other's true identities and only know that a rival firm tried to botch their mission.Back at their respective HQ, Jane analyzes the footage, while John analyzes the data from Jane's recovered laptop and they both realize the identity of their rival.
After their respective companies find out about the botched hit, they are assigned to discover and eliminate the other. Both agencies are adamant that the rival has to be eliminated to maintain confidentiality of their operations.John is reluctant to kill Jane, but he makes 2 mistakes at home, which makes Jane believe that John wants to kill her. First, John was pouring wine to Jane, when the bottle fell and revealed that John was holding a knife. As Jane ran away in her car, John followed her by tripped at a fence and shot his gun by mistake, hitting Jane's windshield.
Jane works with her team and steals John's armory from their home. Jane tries to kill John, but he escapes every time.
After a few "mild" attempts on each other's lives, fueled by a mutual sense of betrayal, the marital spat culminates in a high-octane fight in the Smith house. After a long, evenly matched fight, with their house shot to shambles, they wind up with guns in each other's faces. John balks and lays his gun down. Jane finds she cannot shoot her spouse either, and both succumb to their love instead. Mr. and Mrs. Smith reunite and make love for the first time in a long time. The newly rekindled Smith partnership is quickly threatened by their employers, who have now decided to eliminate the couple. John's best friend and coworker, Eddie (Vince Vaughn), turns down a bounty of $400,000 for each Smith (since he won't get out of bed for anything less than $500,000), but John and Jane find themselves under fire from an army of assassins. Fending off an attack which blows up their house, the Smiths steal their neighbor's minivan and successfully destroy their attackers' three pursuing armored BMWs saloons, all while bickering over their fighting styles and newly discovered personal secrets. After meeting with Eddie, the Smiths decide to fight together to preserve their marriage. They kidnap Danz from his high-security prison in order to give their employers something they want more than the Smiths. Danz reveals that he was merely bait, hired jointly by their employers after it was discovered that the Smiths were married, in the hopes of having one Smith kill the other. John and Jane forgo their separate contingency plans and make their stand together. The Smiths - now working smoothly together as a team - defeat an extended attack by a large force of armed personnel during a long shoot-out inside a department store. The couple meet the marriage counselor again, where the Smiths state how much their marriage has thrived and how happy they really are, with John motioning a subtle "10" when asked about the "sex question" once more.
